Water Quality

by CH4 Gas & Plumbing

Water quality is a real problem in and around Perth here at CH4 Gas & Plumbing we recommend either a whole house water filter or a water softener. Water hardness readings in some areas around Perth are hi as 400, this plays havoc with the life expectancy of taps, fittings, pipes and hot water units. By reducing this hardness, you can extend the lift of your tapware, shower screens, hot water units etc by years. Anything below 60 is considered soft. What is best I hear you say. Every house is different but the first thing to do is get a water sample tested. Some houses complain about the hardness alone and some complain about the taste. A whole house filter or a water softener will help to reduce the hardness just in different ways.

Hard water is water that contains high concentrations of minerals like magnesium and calcium, it is not unhealthy to drink but is a nuisance in the form of cloudy shower screens, white crust on tapware, deposits in the bottom of your kettle, destruction of your hot water unit the list goes on.

Budget wise a water softener is more expensive to install than a whole house filter but in general has less on-going costs.

Water softener by PURETEC.

One of the industry leaders in water filtration these water softeners are great in reducing hardness.

Connected to the incoming mains water the water passes through a chamber filled with Resin beads which have a negative charge, these beads attract the positive charged minerals in the water, this is known as ION EXCHANGE. These deposits cling to the beads thus reducing the hardness of the water and making it soft. When the beads reach capacity, the unit will regenerate washing/flushing the beads clean with a salt solution and then starting the process again. Regeneration will depend on how much water is used but normally every 25 to 30 days.

Water Softener salt is required to refill the chamber, how often depends on water usage.

A recent installation in Clarkson reduced the hardness from 210 to 4 by installing a SOL30 E1.

Budget between $2500 to $3500. All jobs are different, and a site visit is required to correctly quote.

A filter can also be installed with a water softener to help with taste and odour like an under sink water filter linked to the kitchen flick mixer or a Puretec WH1-60.
